Heterocyclic Chemistry [ILLUSTRATED], Fourth edition

This book has so closely matched the requirements of its readership over the years that it has become the first choice for chemists all over the world.Heterocyclic chemistry comprises at least half of all organic chemistry research worldwide. In particular, the vast majority of organic work done in the pharmaceutical and agrochemical industries is heterocyclic chemistry. The fourth edition of Heterocyclic Chemistry retains its original aims and flavour, thus maintaining the principal objective of earlier editions - to teach the fundamentals of heterocyclic reactivity and synthesis in a way that is understandable to second- and third-year undergraduate chemistry students. In recognition of the level at which much heterocyclic chemistry is now normally taught, the authors have included more advanced material, making the book appropriate both for postgraduate taught courses and to postgraduate students. It is important to emphasise that the more advanced sections of the book make it an important reference work for chemists at all levels who are working with heterocyclic compounds in industry. The preparation of the fourth edition has allowed the authors to review thoroughly the material included in earlier editions, to amend it in the light of new knowledge, and to include much recent work. For example, new sections deal with heterocyclic aspects of combinatorial chemistry, bioprocessing, and conducting polymers. In its more advanced sections, the book emphasises modern methods for the synthesis and chemical manipulation of heterocyclic compounds.Essential teaching material in the early chapters aims to capture the essence of heterocyclic reactivity in concise resumes suitable either as introductions, or as revisions/summaries for examination preparation. These early chapters are followed by detailed, systematic discussions of the chemical reactivity of particular heterocyclic systems. Original references and references to reviews are given throughout the text. These are essential for postgraduate teaching and to research workers, but do not interfere with the readability of the text for undergraduate students. Problems, divided into straightforward revision exercises, and more challenging questions (with solutions as an Appendix), help the reader to understand and apply the principles of heterocyclic reactivity and synthesis.

The Basics of Chemistry (Basics of the Hard Sciences)

Written for students beginning a formal study of chemistry, this volume encompasses many different topics in and approaches to introductory chemistry. Chapters are devoted to topics such as the atom, elements and the periodic table, bonding, equilibrium and kinetics, solutions, acids and bases, and chemical reactions. Several chapters discuss broad areas of chemistry including organic chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, and industrial chemistry. Illustrations and diagrams help the student understand chemical structures and reactions, and numerous tables present a wealth of reference information. The historical developments of chemical concepts are traced, and biographical information is provided on key individuals responsible for the development of modern chemistry. Appendices include an extensive bibliography, a glossary of over 400 chemical terms, an overview of Nobel laureates in chemistry, and an element reference table. This book will be of use not only to students, but also to anyone seeking an overview of the field. Teachers of all grades can use Basics of Chemistry as a practical general reference.

The Chemistry of Anilines (Chemistry of Functional Groups)

Aniline is the parent molecule of a vast family of aromatic amines. Since its discovery in 1826 it has become one of the hundred most important building blocks in chemistry. Aniline is used as an intermediate in many different fields of applications, such as isocyanates, rubber processing chemicals, dyes and pigments, agricultural chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
The understanding of functional groups is key for the understanding of all organic chemistry. In the tradition of the Patai Series, this volume treats all aspects of this functional group. It contains chapters on the theoretical and computational foundations; on analytical and spectroscopical aspects with dedicated chapters on Mass Spectrometry, NMR, IR/UV, etc.; on reaction mechanisms; on applications in syntheses.

Biocatalysis

This book not only covers reactions, products and processes with and from biological catalysts, but also the process of designing and improving such biocatalysts, taking into account all recent insights. A unique feature is that the fields of organic chemistry, biology and bioengineering receive equal attention, such that practitioners and students from all three areas are addressed.
Review:
"The book nicely brings together the essentials of biocatalysis including reactions, the products and processes that utilize the methodology, and techniques for improving biocatalysts." (Catalyst, November 2004)"...the book is excellent and could be read cover to cover or used for reference and I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in the field of biocatalysis whether they be graduate students just entering the field or more experienced practitioners." (Organic Process Research & Development)"This giudebook is warmly recommended to scientists in academia, industry and authorities engaged in biocatalysis because one unique feature of primary importance is that the interdisciplinary fields of chemistry, biology and bioengineering receive equal attention, thus, addressing both practioners and students from all three areas."

Green Chemistry and Engineering

Chemical processes provide a diverse array of valuable products and materials used in applications ranging from health care to transportation and food read.freeduan.com processing. Yet these same chemical processes that provide products and materials essential to modern economies, also generate substantial quantities of wastes and emissions. Green Chemistry is the utilization of a set of principles that reduces or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances in design. Due to extravagant costs needed to managing these wastes, tens of billions of dollars a year, there is a need to propose a way to create less waste. Emission and treatment standards continue to become more stringent, which causes these costs to continue to escalate.
This book describes both the science (theory) and engineering (application) principles of Green Chemistry that lead to the generation of less waste. It explores the use of milder manufacturing conditions resulting from the use of smarter organic synthetic techniques and the maintenance of atom efficiency that can temper the effects of chemical processes. By implementing these techniques means less waste, which will save industry millions of dollars over time.
Chemical processes that provide products and materials essential to modern economies generate substantial quantities of wastes and emissions, this new book describes both the science (theory) and engineering (application) principles of Green Chemistry that lead to the generation of less waste.

This book contains expert advise from scientists around the world, encompassing developments in the field since 2000· Aids manufacturers, scientists, managers, and engineers on how to implement ongoing changes in a vast developing field that is important to the environment and our lives.

Microbiological Applications: A Laboratory Manual in General Microbiology

The classic resource for undergraduate microbiology laboratory courses just keeps getting better. The self-contained, clearly illustrated exercises and four-color format make Benson's Microbiological Applications: A Laboratory Manual in General Microbiology the ideal lab manual. Appropriate for either a majors or non-majors lab course, Benson assumes no prior organic chemistry course has been taken.
This eighth edition of Microbiological Applications differs from the previous edition in that it has acquired four new exercises and dropped three experiments. It retains essentially the same format throughout, however. In response to requests for more emphasis on laboratory safety, three new features have been incorporated into the text. In addition, several experiments have been altered to improve simplicity and reliability.
